Great Wall History

History of the actual Great Wall of China…

The Great Wall stands as a symbol of national pride and as a reminder of the rich, treasured history of the Chinese people. The Great Wall is probably China's best-known national site and one of its most popular tourist destinations. It was built to protect China's northern border and was named the "Great Wall" for the impressive stone and earthen fortifications built along the border in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Great Wall is not a single, continuous structure;  it consists of a network of walls and towers with open spaces in between. Estimates of the total length of the Wall vary, depending on which sections are included and how they are measured.

According to conservative estimates, the Great Wall is only about 1,500 miles long. However, other estimates cite a length of up to 4,000 miles. However long it is, the Great Wall stands as a symbol of national pride and as a reminder of the rich, treasured history of the Chinese people.
